Spring Break Fashion for Every Destination

By Amanda Cohen on March 10, 2018

Spring break is among us (and can I just get a quick AMEN because a break is much needed). With any vacation comes packing and with any sort of packing comes shopping (one of my favorite activities). Spring break fashion is obviously very dependent on where you are going (somewhere warm or somewhere cold) and what type of trip it is (action-packed or relaxing). Well, regardless of where you are going, I have some great fashion tips for any and all spring break trips. If this interests you at all, read on!

For the Action-Packed Cold Destination

An action-packed vacation in cold climates can take many forms; from skiing to snowboarding to walking tours, you have a lot to take into consideration. If you are skiing and snowboarding, it is imperative to have your ski gear, a heavy coat, boots, ski goggles, etc. However, since this isn’t my expertise, I’ll talk about the walking tours type of cold vacation. When walking in the cold, you need a durable, warm jacket. When it comes to your jacket of choice, you might have to sacrifice style for comfort and that is okay because you can make up for it with your actual outfit.

Take advantage of your vacation in a sweater-weather area because sweaters are so much fun to pack, even though they do take up a lot of space. One trend that I am all about right now is the oversized turtleneck sweater look. You can opt for a warmer fabric like cashmere or go for something thick but a less heavy material (Revolve Clothing has a bunch of these sweaters). Another great trend is sweaters with elaborate sleeves, but a simple bodice. Use the sleeves as a way to express your personality. If you’re feeling #extra, go for a sweater that has rhinestone/studded detail on the sleeves. If you are feeling more bohemian, go for flowing sleeves with an exotic print.

The bottom part of your outfit should consist of jeans and either cool sneakers or boots (depending on the severity of the cold). Since it is cold outside during your vacation, you should opt for dark-wash or black/grey jeans. However, keep in mind that you will be doing a lot of moving (and a lot of eating because it’s vacation), so I recommend high-rise jeans that have some give. You can even wear jeggings; however, I would steer away from wearing leggings unless this vacation is extremely fast-paced. Jeans are warmer and tend to look better and are more flattering. When choosing sneakers or boots, be sure that they are comfortable. Adidas are great for walking around sneakers and Frye boots are awesome (just be sure to wear thick socks so that your feet don’t slide out of the boots).

For the Action-Packed Warm Destination

When I think of action-packed warm destinations I usually think about trips that involve water sports, hiking, site-seeing, and more. Because of this, most of the items that you will need are pretty straight-forward and you won’t have to buy new clothes (unless this is a very specific trip). If you are planning on doing a lot of water activities, you need bathing suits, shorts, t-shirts, cover-ups, sunglasses, and sunscreen (I know that this technically isn’t a clothing item, but it’s definitely necessary). If you are planning on scuba diving, you either need to bring your scuba equipment or be prepared to rent your goggles, BCD, a wetsuit, etc.

If your trip involves a lot of hiking an exercise, you need workout clothes. If you are hiking, I would recommend wearing cropped leggings, even if it’s hot out. When hiking you are prone to things like poison oak, mosquito bites, and just general cuts and scrapes. Definitely pack layers with you (like a light pull-over) because it’s more likely to be chillier in the morning than in the middle of the day. I would also bring a backpack that has a compartment for water because you need to stay hydrated! You will also need sunglasses, but I would bring a cheaper pair because there is a good chance that they could fall off of your face during the hike. In addition, bring a hat because you do not want your scalp to get burnt!

When purchasing your workout clothes, I definitely recommend going to stores like Lululemon, Zella, or Athleta. Even though the items are more expensive, they are durable and are guaranteed to have items specific to whatever activity you plan on doing. Be prepared for the warm weather and for the heat and bugs that come with it (like I said, sunscreen and insect repellent will be your best friends on your trip).

For the Relaxing Warm Destination

Ah yes, a nice relaxing break sounds lovely. However, what will you need for your excursion? When packing for a trip that promotes relaxation, I break it down according to my meals: breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I know this sounds crazy, but it honestly works. Let’s start with breakfast. Depending on what your morning routine is like your breakfast attire may look different. For some of us, we wear our workout clothes so that we can get a quick run in before all of the glorious relaxation. For others, we put on sweatpants or shorts so that we can indulge in a buffet of bacon, eggs, pancakes, and more. Pack comfy shorts, t-shirts, and sandals for breakfast. You want to wear something comfortable and something that allows you to eat a bunch of food.

Let’s think about lunch. On warm trips, lunch involves lounging by the pool or beach, so all you really need for this part of your trip is a bathing suit, sunglasses, and a cover-up. Your cover-up can be a sarong, shorts and a t-shirt, flowy beach pants, a romper, etc. In terms of bathing suit fashion, one-pieces are all the rage right now so definitely switch between one-pieces and traditional bikinis so that you can avoid strange-looking tan-lines. Small spec-like sunglasses are in right now, so if you want to stay at the height of fashion bring a pair of these. However, I personally like to wear large, over-sized sunglasses because I feel like they go better with my head shape. Just pick and choose whatever you love the most, you can’t go wrong!

Now it’s dinner time: wine is flowing and food is coming out of the kitchen so fast that you don’t even know where to start. When going on a warm vacation, I bring a few types of dinner outfits: (1) white jeans and a flowy top, (2) a romper, (3) a skirt and/or dress outfit, and (4) light-wash jeans with a top. All of these outfits are perfect for dinner and you can switch around tops and bottoms so that you can create new looks without having to pack a lot of extra clothing. When packing shoes, bring a couple pairs of wedges, two pairs of sandals, and a cute pair of sneakers. With all of these pieces in your arsenal, you will be physically prepared to drink your tropical drinks and order a bunch of items off of the menu.

Safe travels, happy shopping, and have an awesome spring break!
